Fordyce Slams 10 Kills as Women’s Volleyball Tops Purchase in Four

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.—  York College junior middle hitter Sharon Fordyce recorded a match-high ten kills, hit .259 and recorded three blocks to lead the Cardinals women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-12, 18-25, 25-20) victory over Purchase College in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.

York played one of its strongest matches of the season, improving to 5-16 with the victory.  Purchase dropped to 1-11 in the defeat.

The first set was a battle as the two teams went back-and-forth for most of the set.  York had a narrow 18-17 lead, when the Cardinals scored five of the next six points to pull ahead 23-18. Three Purchase errors, with kills by Fordyce and sophomore middle hitter, Stayce Kay Muirhead accounted for the five York points during the stretch.  After another kill by Fordyce, York put the set away following a Purchase hitting error.

York really clicked in the second set, registering 11 kills—four more than in any other set— and hitting .200.  The Cardinals opened with four straight points and seven of the first eight to take a commanding 7-1 lead.  They never looked back and won 25-12.

However, the Cardinals came out slow in the third and put themselves in a 13-7 hole following a ball-handling error. York rallied though and eventually took a 17-16 lead only to see the Panthers close the set on an 8-0 run.  Purchase's Megan Culvey helped propel the Panthers with a pair of kills during the stretch.

The fourth set was closely contested as well.  The Cardinals were holding on to a 20-18 lead, when a kill by NaaDira Patrick and then a ball-handling error gave York a four-point cushion.  From there, York would close out the set a few points later following a Purchase service error.

In addition to Fordyce's big game, Muirhead added six kills and Patrick finished with four.  Freshman libero Allison Li led York with eight digs, while freshman setter Kiranjeet Kaur recorded a team-high 12 assists.

Mulvey had a big game for the Panthers in defeat, picking up a team-high nine kills, while hitting .273.  Megan Toole had a match-high 19 digs.

York will host the College of New Rochelle on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
