PURCHASE, NY— The York College women's volleyball team began the 2011 season on Saturday with a tri-match at Manhattanville College. The Lady Cardinals dropped the opening match to host Manhattanville by a score of 3-0 (25-14, 25-5, 25-9) and then lost the second match by the narrowest of margins. York fell to Penn State University-Abington 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 11-25, 14-16).
The Lady Cardinals will likely look back at the first and final set with regret, as they lost both sets by just a two-point margin. York also held a lead late in the final set (11-9) but once again could not hold on. They also held match point at 14-13 but an attack error allowed PSU to tie the score at 14 apiece. After another York attack error, PSU-Abington closed out the match with a spike by Johangelie Thomas.
Despite the loss, York was led by
Sharon Fordyce who registered nine kills and Laureen Kay Oliver who added ten digs.
Evelyn Florentino finished with 16 assists and 12 digs.
The first match against Manhattanville was dominated by the Valiants as they needed just 59 minutes to defeat the Lady Cardinals. Ally Johnson finished with 11 kills and Makana Gomes added 10 kills to lead the Valiants. York had three kills apiece from
Stayce Kay Muirhead,
Yasheka Lewis and Fordyce.
