York Holds on for 2-1 Win over Rival Hunter College

BOX SCORE

JAMAICA, NY— York College and Hunter College renewed its rivalry in men's soccer Wednesday afternoon, as the Cardinals held off a late surge to defeat the Hawks 2-1 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest.

The two teams have met in the conference playoffs each of the past three seasons, twice in the conference championship game.  So as expected, the contest was heated throughout.

York struck first late in the first half when Andre Adelson snuck a shot in net from a difficult angle to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage with six minutes to play before halftime.

In the 70th minute Edner Junior Geffard took a rebound off a shot from Adelson and put the ball in a net to give York what seemed to be a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

However, just a little over two minutes later, Hunter's Mario Baez headed a ball into goal to cut the lead in half.  Hunter continued to put pressure on York in the final 26 minutes of play—and had some scoring opportunities—but could not get the equalizer.

York keeper Qudus Kassim turned away ten shots to preserve the victory for York, who improved to 2-10, 2-2 in the CUNYAC.  Hunter fell to 3-5-1, 2-1 in the CUNYAC.

The Cardinals will visit John Jay College on Saturday at noon.
