Amadou’s Golden Goal Lifts York over Brooklyn in 2 OT

Amadou Nets Winning Goal 12 Seconds into OT

BOX SCORE

JAMAICA, NY— Rachidi Amadou's golden goal just 12 seconds into the second overtime gave the York College men's soccer team an exciting 2-1 victory over rival Brooklyn College on Saturday afternoon.

Amadou took a pass from Menard Millus just a few seconds after the start of the second overtime and rifled a shot into the top-right corner from about 20 yards out, giving the Cardinals their first victory of the season.  Amadou had been frustrated all game, taking six shots without being able to find the back of the net, until coming through in overtime.

York opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play, when an Amadou cross was headed in by freshman Philippe Sainvil.   However, Brooklyn responded back in the 30th minute to get the equalizer.  A handball by a York player gave the Bulldog's Steven Favaloro a penalty kick opportunity.  Favalor rifled a low shot to the left corner, just past the outstretched reach of York keeper Qudus Kassim.

The second half was scoreless throughout, with each team missing out on strong scoring opportunities.  Both teams had shots hit the post in the half and Brooklyn escaped a hairy situation, where one of its defenders had to stop a shot when their keeper was forced out of goal.

Kassim performed well in net, stopping 11 shots on the day.  Brooklyn keeper Stamatis Boundouris turned away four shots.  The Cardinals held a 26-21 edge in shots and had 12 corner kicks to Brooklyn's three.

With the win, York improves to 1-9, 1-2 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while Brooklyn falls to 0-5, 0-2 in the CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will visit Old Westbury on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
