Women’s Volleyball Loses Twice in Regular Season Finale

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball team lost a pair of home contests in its regular season finale, losing to St. Elizabeth College 3-1 (27-25,22-25,25-13,25-22) in the opener and falling to Rutgers-Newark University 3-0 (25-10,25-9,25-17).

After dropping the first set, York rallied to take the second and even up the score.   York jumped out to a ten point advantage in the second set and fought off a late surge by St. Elizabeth to tie the match at one set apiece.   St Elizabeth rebounded in third, taking the set easily before winning a nail biter in the fourth to take the match.
 
York was led by Stayce Kay Muirhead, who had ten kills and three blocks.  York also received nine digs and five kills from Anteneika Burton and eight kills and eight digs from Yasheka LewisPamela Yap picked up 25 assists, while Sharon Fordyce added eight kills.
 
Rutgers-Newark Recap
It was all Rutgers from the start as the Scarlet Raiders cruised to a three-set victory.  Rutgers-Newark served up 14 aces, while holding York without an ace. They also picked up 33 kills to just 14 for York.   York's top performer was Fordyce who slammed five kills with a .231 hitting percentage.  Burton added a match-high 11 digs.
 
The game was also “Pink Day” and “Faculty Appreciation Day.”  York wore pink uniforms to help support breast cancer awareness.  There was also a reception prior to the game for all faculty.  A number of teachers stuck around afterwards to watch the Cardinals in action. 
 
York will now take on Baruch College in the quarterfinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Baruch.
