Muirhead’s 16 Kills Not Enough as York Falls in Four Sets to CSI

STATEN ISLAND, NY— York College freshman Stayce Kay Muirhead slammed a match-high 16 kills, with a .316 hitting percentage, but it would not be enough for a victory Tuesday evening, as the Cardinals fell to the College of Staten Island 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23) in the final CUNY Athletic Conference contest of the 2011 season.
 
York also got major contributions from sophomore Sharon Fordyce who registered ten kills and five aces.  Yasheka Lewis added six kills and a 13 digs, while Pamela Yap had 26 assists.  Laureen Cay Oliver also recorded a team-high 15 digs at libero.  
 
Staten Island was led by Vasiliki Stergioula who had a team-high ten kills to go along with 13 digs.  Libero Jean Lewandowski had a match-high 20 digs, while setter Jennifer Samuel had 16 assists and eight service aces.
 
York nearly rallied from seven points down in the fourth set, which would have forced a deciding fifth set.  Trailing 16-9, York gradually closed to within 24-23 following a kill by Fordyce.   The Cardinals had fought off two other match points prior but CSI finally clinched the match following a kill by Stergioula. 
 
York will close out the regular season on Thursday with a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.  York will entertain St. Elizabeth at 5:30 p.m. and Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 p.m.
