Women’s Volleyball Loses Two Games to Two Different St. Josephs

PATCHOGUE, NY— Competing at the St. Joseph's College Tournament in Patchogue, Long Island, the York College women's volleyball team lost to St. Joseph's—both the Brooklyn and Long Island campus—on Friday night.  York fell to the Brooklyn campus by a score of 3-1 (25-15, 14-25, 25-15, 25-20) and later lost to the Long Island campus 3-0 (25-11, 27-25, 25-9).

In the Brooklyn contest, York once again got a big game from freshman Stayce Kay Muirhead, who slammed ten kills on 20 attempts (.300), while also serving up two aces and recording four digs.  Pamela Yap added 18 assists and nine digs, while Antenieka Burton and Laureen Cay Oliver registered seven digs and six digs respectively.

Needing to win the fourth set to stay alive, York could not get it done.  St. Joseph's held a small lead throughout the set, never allowing the Cardinals to move ahead.  York was in striking distance throughout and trailed by just two points (20-19) late in the set, following a kill by Sharon Fordyce.  However, the Bears rolled off five of the final six points to win the match.

Things weren't as close against the Long Island Campus.  The Eagles took the first and third sets with relative ease and won a hard-fought second match to get the sweep.

Despite the loss, York had strong performances from Yap, who had six digs and ten assists and from Krystina Rivera who added a team-high seven digs.  Burton also had seven digs, while Oliver added five.

York will wrap up the St. Joseph's tournament Saturday when they take on Ramapo College.
