Soccer Drops Season Opener, 2-1, to Old Westbury

– The York College soccer team lost a tightly contested match to open the 2010 season, falling to SUNY Old Westbury 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.  After the Cardinals took an early lead, Old Westbury would rally for two unanswered goals to earn the victory.

 

The Cardinals Wilkerson C. Jean Jacques scored his first career goal just 12 minutes into the contest to give York a 1-0 advantage.  Freshman Rachidi Amadoli picked up an assist on the goal. 

 

Just 12 minutes later, the Panthers would get the equalizer, scoring on a penalty kick off the foot of Diego Mercado.   The score would remain tied at 1-1, going into halftime. 

 

Five minutes into the second half, Old Westbury's Anthony Ippolito would net the game-winner with an assist from Thomas Manz.  

 

York keeper Pierreson Pierre-Louis stopped four shots in goal, while Old Westbury goalie Darian Bryan also turned away four shots.  The Panthers held a narrow 16-12 edge in shots and both teams had seven corner kicks apiece. 

 

York falls to 0-1 with the loss, while Old Westbury improves to 1-0.  The Cardinals will play their season-opening match on Saturday at noon against Trine University (IN).  Admission to the match is free.
