NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark junior Pedro Burgos scored 12 of his game-high 20 points to ignite a 31-6 run in the opening half as unbeaten Rutgers-Newark stormed past York (NY) College, 93-50, in a non-conference match-up Friday night.
Burgos, who netted 18 points in the first period, nailed three treys and added a conventional 3-point play, which changed a slim 14-12 lead into a 45-18 bulge with 1:44 left in the half. RNU's Greg Moore dropped in a pair of 3-point jumpers during the spurt to help the Scarlet Raiders (9-0) connect on nine of 15 long-range shots in the first 20 minutes.
The lead swelled to 88-41 with 4:20 left on a 3-point jumper by sophomore guard Tyler Jones who notched a dozen points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench.
For the game, the Raiders held York to a season-low 26.8% (15-56) field goal accuracy while hitting a sizzling 44.9% (33-59) of their own tries.
Junior guard Al'Don Muhammad dished out eight assists while adding seven points, five rebounds and two steals while junior forward Jeremiah Rivers chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
Senior center Marcel Esonwune paced York with 15 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. Junior guard Steven Arzu added ten points
York plays SUNY-Old Westbury at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic at the APEX at Lehman College.
