Cardinals Fall to Bridgewater on Last-Second Jumper

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – A jumper by Bridgewater College's Rick Maloney with just six seconds left lifted the Eagles to an 84-83 victory over the York College men's basketball team in the consolation game of the Christopher Newport University Point Plaza Invitational Saturday evening.

With York trailing by two points with just 47 seconds remaining, York's Marcel Esonwune was sent to the free throw line. Esonwune hit the first and missed the second but York grabbed the offensive rebound.  After a time-out, Esonwune scored to put York up by one point, 83-82, with just 12 seconds remaining.

However, on the ensuing possession, Bridgewater's Rashad Moore found Maloney, who drained the winning shot with just six seconds on the clock.  York was able to get off a three-pointer as time expired but the shot was off the mark and the Cardinals were dealt a heart-breaking loss.

Despite shooting 49 percent to Bridgewater's 42 percent and winning the rebounding battle by a 46-33 margin, the Cardinals came out on the losing end, primarily because of turnovers.  York lost the turnover battle once again, giving away the ball 21 times, while forcing just 12 turnovers.

Esonwune had yet another monster game in defeat, netting 37 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking eight shots.  In the two games at the tournament, the senior All-American averaged 35 points, 11.5 rebounds and 7.5 blocks. Unfortunately, his efforts were wasted as the Cardinals fell just short in both contests and now fall to 1-5 with the loss.

Also contributing for York was Kevin Lausell who finished with 16 points and William Holley, who added 14 points.  The Eagles (2-4) were led by Cody Griffith, who netted 18 points and Kyle Hammond, who finished with 17.

York will try to get back on track this Tuesday, when they visit City Tech at 7:00 p.m.
