Men’s Basketball Drops Season-Opener to Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ— The York College men's basketball team could not recover from a slow start and dropped it's season-opener to Ramapo College by a score of 70-60 Monday evening.
The Roadrunners got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 19-5 lead just 5:43 into the contest. A jumper by Ramapo's Elgin Brown capped off a 14-0 run for the Roadrunners. York rallied late in the first half, cutting the lead to three points, 36-33, when Shamir Wilkinson netted a three-pointer with 50 seconds to go before halftime. Ramapo would take a 38-33 lead into the locker room.
Early in the second half, the Roadrunners kept a comfortable edge over the Cardinals, extending to 12 points on three occasions. But with 10:42 to play, York went on a 6-0 run capped off by a jumper from Marcel Esonwune to close the gap to six points, 53-47. The Cardinals would come within three points with seven minutes to play, 55-52, before the Roadrunners again worked their way to a double-digit lead, 67-56, with a good basket and an and-one shot from Travis Conyers. Ramapo held on in the final minutes to earn the 70-60 victory.
Despite the loss, Esonwune had an outstanding game for York, recording 21 points, 13 boards and five blocked shots to lead the Cardinals. He is now just 26 rebounds away from 1,000 boards in his career. William Holley added 13 points and six boards, while Wilkinson paced the Cardinals with 10 points and six rebounds. Ramapo was led by Ahmad Hassan who scored 19 points and grabbed six boards.
York (0-1) will host Kean University on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
