Women's Volleyball Splits Doubleheader with Cheyney

CHEYNEY, PA— The York College women's volleyball team split a pair of contests against Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Saturday. The Lady Cardinals won match one 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 27-25) and lost the second match by the narrowest of margins, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13).
Match One Recap
Despite winning 3-0, the match was tightly contested as York narrowly pulled off each set. In the third set, the Lady Cardinals found themselves facing a set point, 25-24, but a service error by Cheyney evened up the match. Then Pamela Yap picked up a kill and followed with an ace to close the match for York.
Sharon Fordyce led all players with six kills, while Mi-Asia King and Maria Suero-Santos added five kills apiece. Miryam Candela finished with ten assists and 12 digs.
Match Two Recap
The nightcap turned into a see-saw battle. The Lady Cardinals held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set, but Cheyney rallied in the fourth set, winning 25-19. The match ended with a thrilling fifth set. York trailed 13-9 in the deciding set, but they rolled off four straight points, thanks to two aces from Fordyce to even up the score. However, Cheyney would not be denied and they picked up two straight points to win the match.
King recorded a match-high 12 kills for York, while Suero-Santos added nine kills. Candela finished with 21 aces and Yap added 11 digs.
York, 4-10, will visit Ramapo College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
