York Eliminated from Playoff Contention with Loss to CSI
Box Score
JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball team saw its CUNY Athletic Conference playoff hopes come to an end as they fell to the College of Staten Island, 3-1 (25-14, 32-30, 24-26, 25-21) on Tuesday evening. The two teams held identical conference records going into the match with the final playoff spot up for grabs.
CSI got off to a fast start winning the first set convincingly. The Dolphins looked like they would take the second set easily as well, after a Danielle Ponsiglione kill gave them a 20-16 lead. York fought back, however, and eventually had a set point of its own after an Evelyn Florentino kill gave them a 29-28 advantage. The Dolphins would fight off two set points and then closed out the set with consecutive aces by Kaitlyn Flynn.
In the third set, the Dolphins had a chance to sweep the match when they held a 24-23 lead, but a kill by Maria Suero-Santos, an ace by Pamela Yap and a ball-handling error on the Dolphins gave York the third set.
The Lady Cardinals could not build off the momentum from the third set as the Dolphins held off York in the fourth set to earn the victory and clinch a playoff spot.
Flynn recorded a team-high 14 kills and Joanna Tepedino added 13 kills to lead the Dolphins. York was led by Sharon Fordyce, who banged a match-high 15 kills. Suero-Santos added 11 kills and Mi-Asia King finished with nine. Setter Miryam Candela had 30 assists and a match-high 16 digs, while libero Pamela Yap added 14 digs.
York will close out the 2010 season on Friday when they host SUNY Purchase at 8:00 p.m.
