Evelyn Nets 31 as York Tops Eastern Connecticut State

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Elijah Evelyn netted a career-high 31 points on 12-18 shooting, and Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez finished with 28 points to lead the York College men's basketball team to a 92-72 win over Eastern Connecticut State Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Captains Shootout. 

 

The turning point of the game came near the end of the first half.  York held a six-point advantage (33-27) with 4:37 to play before halftime, when they closed the half with a 12-3 run to take 45-30 lead into the locker room. Eveyln, who netted 17 of his total points in the final seven minutes of the half, capped the run with one of his five three-pointers with 17 seconds remaining.

 

The second half continued to be a one-sided affair, as the Cardinals went up by as many as 26 before ending the game with a 20-point advantage.

 

Also contributing for York was Marcel Esonwune who finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots and Ryan Exum who netted 13 points and dished out five assists. Eastern Connecticut State was led by Edwin Ortiz and Jamie Kohn, who scored 14 points and 13 points respectively.

 

York improves to 6-5 on the season, while Eastern falls to 7-2.
