Second Half Rally Buries York as Cardinals Fall, 86-65

JAMAICA, NY— A 20-4 run late in the second half propelled Rutgers-Newark to an 86-65 win over the York College men's basketball team in a non-conference affair Wednesday evening. 

 

A game that was tight throughout turned into a blowout in a just a few minutes of play. York trailed 66-58 with 8:41 to play when the Scarlet Raiders caught fire.  The Cardinals turned the ball over six times and Rutgers-Newark shot 8-9 from the field during the six minute stretch which put RNU up 86-62 with 2:52 to play.   

 

Rutgers-Newark shot well all night long, shooting 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, while York shot just 37 percent and 23 percent from long range. 

 

RNU's De'Vion Manning led his team with 20 points, while James Johnson and DeShawn Singleton each finished with 19.  Tim Smith also added 14 points and seven boards to pace the Scarlet Raiders

 

For York, Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez led all scorers with 23 points, while Marcel Esonwune finished with 14 points, 13 boards and six blocks. 

 

With the loss, York falls to 4-5, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 5-3.  York will return to action on Saturday when they host New Jersey City University. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
