York Falls Short against Dolphins

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY – In a game that went down to the wire, the York College women’s basketball team fell to Staten Island, 76-73, in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Friday night.

The game appeared to be a mismatch on paper as Staten Island came into the game with a 10-4 record while the Lady Cardinals were still searching for their first win.  However, the game was tightly contested throughout with 19 lead changes, 12 of which came in the second half.

With 2:42 to play, York was holding on to a narrow 65-64 lead.  However, the Dolphins rallied and scored seven of the next eight points to take a 72-67 lead with 0:38 second remaining.

Freshman Justina Boatwright (Queens, NY/ Van Buren) dribbled up court on the next possession and drilled a three to cut the lead two points.  After York fouled to stop the clock, CSI’s Melanie D’Ambrosi hit both free-throws to put the Dolphins up by four.  Once again, Boatwright drained a three on the ensuing possession to make it a one point game.  After CSI hit both free throws again to go up by three, York had one final shot with four second left.  Maimouna Dabo (Bamako, Mali/ Lycee Notre Dame Du Niger) got off a good look but the shot hit off the rim to end the game.

For York, Boatwright led the way with 18 points and six rebounds.  Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) added 11 points and Niya Jarvis (Bronx, NY/ Talent Unlimited) finished with 10 points and eight boards.  Chiquita Greene (Brooklyn, NY/ Harry Van Arsdale) paced York with eight points and 11 rebounds.

For CSI, Megan Sullivan put together a monster game, recording 24 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, and six steals.  Nicole Estrada netted 23 points, had six boards and swiped four steals.

York falls to 0-11, 0-3 in the CUNYAC.  They will return to action on Wednesday when they visit City Tech at 5:00 p.m.
