Exum, Esonwune Lead York in Rout of Medgar Evers

Ryan Exum (Bronx, NY/ Truman) and Marcel Esonwune (Lagos, Nigeria/ Marist Brothers) each recorded double-doubles to lead the York College men’s basketball team to a 85-64 rout of conference-rival Medgar Evers College on Wednesday.  Exum scored 11 points and dished out 12 assists, while Esonwune finished with a team-high 19 points and 11 boards for York.  

 

Medgar Evers kept it close in the first half, trailing by only five, 36-31, at the break thanks to some strong outside shooting.  The Cougars shot 51.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range in the first half. 

 

Things turned in the second half however, as York’s shooters found their stroke, while the Cougars went cold.  The Cardinals shot 52.8 percent in the second half compared to 43.3 percent for Medgar Evers.   York opened the second half with an 18-0 run to extend their lead to 23 points, 54-31.  York eventually stretched its lead to 30 points before ending the game with a 21-point margin. 

 

The Cardinals also got strong contributions from Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez (Woodside, NY/ Pfeiffer University) who finished with 14 points and five boards and Omari Phipps (Laurleton, NY/ St. Johns Prep) who netted 11 points and grabbed seven boards. Rodney Bennett (Elmhurst, NY/ Chapperal) came off the bench to score 12 points in just 16 minutes of action. 

 

Despite the loss, Medgar Evers got a game-high 27 points from Ronald Holloway and 14 points from Marcus Archer. 

 

With the win York improves to 4-11, 1-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference play, while Medgar Evers falls to 0-13, 0-3 in the CUNYAC.

 

York will return to action on Friday when they host the College of Staten Island at 8:00 p.m.
