Lady Cardinals Win Fourth Straight; Top Hunter 76-58

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women’s basketball team used a strong second half where they outscored Hunter College by 17 points to seal their fourth straight victory, a 76-58, triumph over the Hawks on Wednesday night.

 

The Lady Cardinals, who dropped their first 11 games of the season, have now won four straight to improve to 4-11, 3-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference.  

 

Turnovers were once again, a strong point for York, as they forced 39 turnovers which resulted in 27 points.   It is the second straight game York has forced at least 30 turnovers.  

 

The game was tight for the first half of play. Hunter (5-10, 2-6 CUNYAC) held a slight advantage for most of the first half until the 7:16 mark, when a Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) three-pointer gave York a 22-20 lead.  York would take a narrow, 36-35, lead into the locker room. 

 

Mid-way through the second half, York began to pull away.  With the Lady Cardinals leading by six points, 54-48, and eight minutes to play, York opened up a 7-0 run capped off by a Chiquita Greene (Brooklyn, NY/ Harry Van Arsdale) lay-up to take 13 point lead, 62-49.   That would prove to be the turning point of the game as Hunter never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

 

York’s Justina Boatwright (Queens, NY/ Martin Van Buren) led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Kadisha Wickham (Brooklyn, NY/ HJ Robinson) added 15 points and four steals, while Maeweather and Greene each added ten points.

 

For Hunter, Andrea Buckham recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 14 rebounds.  Megan McKenna netted 12 points. 

 

York will return to action on Monday, when they host SUNY-Cobleskill at 7:00 p.m.
