Vilsaint’s Two Goals Puts York Back in First Place; Cardinals defeat Hunter 4-2

QUEENS, NY- Elysee Vilsaint (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/ South Shore) netted two second half goals to lead the York College soccer team to a come-from-behind, 4-2, victory over conference-rival Hunter College Saturday. The win gives York (5-4, 3-1 CUNYAC) nine points in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) standings and puts them back into first place.
York trailed on two different occasions in the contest but rallied back each time to earn a key conference win over the Hawks, who were tied for first place with Brooklyn College with seven points entering the game.
With the score tied at 2-2, in the 63rd minute, Vilsaint scored on a free kick, finding a hole in the defense’s wall to put the Cardinals ahead for good. 14 minutes later, in the 77th minute, Vilsaint put the game away on another unassisted goal to give York the 4-2 victory. The two goals gave Vilsaint nine on the season to add to his conference-leading total.
Hunter (5-5-1, 2-2-1 CUNYAC) looked to be in control of the game early on, scoring just three minutes into the match when Devin Leahy went top-shelf and beat York goalie Marcin Kasza (Kobluszi, Poland/ Newcomers).
The score remained the same until the 28th minute when York’s Hugo Cicanois (Santiago, Chile/ School 436) recorded his fifth goal of the season to tie things up at 1-1.
Then in the 40th minute, Hunter’s Danny Vera set up Mauro Ortiz to put the Hawks back on top, 2-1.
In the second half, York’s Ini Ekanem (Lagos, Nigeria/ Evander Childs) knotted things up at 2-2 when he scored his first goal of the year in the 56th minute.
The two teams each got off 14 shots apiece, while York held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Kasza stopped four shots in goal for the Cardinals, while Hunter’s Noah Fessler made five saves.
York will host SUNY Farmingdale on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
