Softball Takes a Pair from Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE , NY— Renee Thompson (Jamaica, WI/ Hillcrest) went a combined 5-7 with seven RBI’s in two contests to lead the York College softball team to a sweep of Sarah Lawrence College in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday. The Lady Cardinals won game one, 17-9, and took game two, 21-12. With the win York improves to 5-12 on the year.
Game One Recap
Thomspon went 2-4 with five RBI’s including a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning, which helped the Lady Cardinals come from behind to win the first game of the day. York trailed 7-3 going into the top of the fifth until they rallied for six runs in the inning to take 9-7 lead.
After Sarah Lawrence tied the game in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Cardinals responded with another big inning, plating eight runs in the top of the sixth. Thompson once again had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double which gave York a 14-9 advantage. Three more runs came in before the inning was over giving York a 17-9 lead. The Lady Cardinals then held on in the bottom half of the inning to earn the win.
Patricia Georgi (Flushing, NY/ Robert F. Kennedy) was 2-4 with four runs scored and Christina Lopez (Ozone Park, NY/ John Adams) was 2-3 with three RBI’s and a run scored. Freshman Crystal Alvarado (Bronx, NY/ James Madison) was 1-3 with three walks, two runs and three RBI’s.
On the mound, Pitcher Swelly Cabello (Brooklyn, NY/ Franklin K. Lane) allowed just two earned runs over six innings pitched, while fanning eight batters.
Game Two Recap
Game two lacked the drama that game one had as York put the contest away early, scoring 12 runs in the top of the first. York sent 17 batters to the plate in the inning and took advantage of three errors and four walks by the Sarah Lawrence defense. Lotonia Dolhouse (Elkarht, Indiana/ Mawell) had two hits in the inning, scored two runs and drove in a run to lead York in the inning.
York scored three in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth as they plated 21 runs. It is the third time this season York has scored 20 runs in a contest.
For York, three players had three hits in the nightcap; Georgi was 3-5 with three runs and an RBI, Dalhouse was 3-4, with four runs and two RBI’s and Thompson was 3-3 with a run and two RBI’s. Christie Ramiah (Brookyn, NY/ Franklin K. Lane) and Phylicia Harrison (Brooklyn, NY/ Paul Robeson) each added two hits apiece.
York will return to action on Tuesday when they visit St. Josephs (BK) College at 5 p.m.
