Lady Cardinals Can’t Overcome Early Deficit Against John Jay
Box Score
NEW YORK NY— A nine-run first inning deficit proved to be too much for the York College softball team as the Lady Cardinals fell to John Jay College, 13-2, in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest on Thursday evening. The loss drops York’s record to 3-12, 3-7 in the CUNYAC.
John Jay’s Danielle Bonici highlighted the nine-run first inning, with a two-run home run, which gave the Bloodhounds a 2-0 lead. John Jay pounded out six more hits that inning and plated another seven runs to put the Lady Cardinals in a big hole.
The Lady Cardinals settled down and played with John Jay the rest of the way but the first-inning advantage was just too much to overcome. In the top of the second, York loaded the bases with one out. Lotonia Dolhouse (Elkhart, Indiana/ Maxwell) scored the Lady Cardinals first run of the game when she scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Patricia Georgi (Flushing, NY/ Robert F. Kennedy) singled home another run to give York its second run of the game.
However, John Jay put across three more runs in the second and another in the third to put the game away. York pitcher Swelly Cabello (Brooklyn, NY/ Franklin K. Lane) came in relief to keep the Bloodhounds at bay in the final two innings. Cabello struck out two batters and did not allow a hit her two innings pitched.
For York, Georgi was 2-3 with an RBI. Bonici had a big day for John Jay, going 3-4 with a run and five RBI’s.
York will return to action on Saturday when they visit Sarah Lawrence at noon in a non-conference affair.
