Old Westbury Rallies for Win over Lady Cardinals

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— After trailing in the first half, Old Westbury outscored the York College women’s basketball team by 16 points in the second half en route to an 84-72 victory over the Lady Cardinals Saturday afternoon.

Old Westbury’s Courtney Milton netted 15 of her 20 points in the second half and finished with 14 points rebounds to lead the comeback for the Lady Panthers.  Pamela Robinson also finished with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists to aide Old Westbury.

For York, Kadisha Wickham (Brooklyn, NY/ HJ Robinson) and Justina Boatwright (Queens, NY/ Martin Van Buren) each finished with 15 points to lead the Lady Cardinals in a losing effort.   Elizabeth Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/ Bushwick) added 13 points to pace York.

The first half was tight throughout and each team struggled in the turnover department combining to turn the ball over 35 times.  The Lady Panthers took the early advantage, however, and took their biggest lead of the half when a Josey Avery jumper gave Old Westbury a 20-12 lead with 9:09 to play before halftime.

The Lady Cardinals slowly cut into the deficit and took the lead, 32-31, following a Padilla jump shot with 1:33 to play.  York would lead by two, 34-32, going into the locker room.

York looked to be in control of the game mid-way through the second half as they extended their lead to six points, 59-53, with 8:37 to play.   Old Westbury then got hot and took advantage of some Lady Cardinal turnovers going on a 21-2 run over the next four minutes.  Milton led the charge with seven points during the stretch  to give Old Westbury a 74-61 advantage.  The run would be too much for York to overcome with just four minutes left in the game.

The Panthers won despite turning the ball over 39 times which York turned into 22 points.  However, Old Westbury took advantage of a large free throw disparity, shooting 41 free throws compared to York’s 27.  The Lady Panthers connected on 28 of those shots from the charity stripe (68.3 %).

Old Westbury improves to 6-3 with the win, while York falls to 0-7.  The Lady Cardinals will be idle until January 2 when they take on Keene State (NH).
