MAHWAH, NJ – Despite 23 points from sophomore Omari Phipps (St. Johns Prep/ Laurleton, NY) and 21 points from junior Nahum Verna (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/ Hillcrest), the York College men’s basketball team fell to Ramapo College, 83-74, in a non-conference match-up Tuesday night.
Ramapo (4-1) put the game out of reach early, jumping out to a 13-0 advantage. The run was keyed by a three-pointer by Ramapo’s Ahmad Hassan. However, the Cardinals battled back and cut the Road Runners lead to 15-12 when Phipps connected on a jump shot with 12:55 to go in the half.
Ramapo quickly responded back with a 12-3 run capped off by a Hassan layup and eventually went into the locker room with a 50-37 cushion.
York never threatened the rest of the way. Ramapo extended their lead to as many as 22 points before York cut into the lead late to make the final score 83-74.
The Road Runners had five players in double figures, led by Tim Wesley who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Andre Kenny added 16 points and five boards and Davian Plunkett finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
