Box Score

KINGS POINT, NY – The York College women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday evening.  A 12-0 USMMA run midway through the first half proved to be the difference in the ball game.

The Lady Cardinals were in the game early on, trailing 8-7 with 16:20 left in the first half.   However, over the next six minutes, the Mariners exploded for 12 unanswered points, capped off by a three-pointer by Kristen Hetsko at the 10:22 mark in the first half.

York outscored the Mariners from that point on but the deficit was too large to overcome.   The Lady Cardinals got as close as eight points when junior Chiquita Greene (Brooklyn, NY/ Harry Van Arsdale) hit a lay-up with 17 minutes to play.

Despite the loss, Greene recorded a career-high 22 points to go along with four rebounds and six steals to lead York.   Sophomore Elizabeth Padillla (Brooklyn, NY/ Bushwick) also put together a nice game, netting 13 points, while senior Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) finished with eight.   Niya Jarvis (Bronx, NY/ Talent Unlimited) paced York with six points and seven boards.

For USMMA, Hetsko finished with a team-high 21 points on 7-10 shooting, while Stephanie Waller scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds.

The Mariners won by a healthy margin, despite losing the turnover battle 25-14 and allowing York to turn those turnovers into 21 points.  The difference in the game was USMMA’s strong shooting.  The Mariners shot 50.9 percent form the field compared to York’s 35.6 percent.

The Lady Cardinals (0-1) will now be idle until December 2 when they host Brooklyn College at 6:00 p.m.
