JAMAICA, NY— Marcel Esonwune (Nigeria/ Marist Brothers) recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, and Aaron Wilson (Brooklyn, NY/ Thomas Jefferson) netted a team-high 15 points to lead the York College men’s basketball team to a 70-54 win over Lehman College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match-up on Wednesday night.
York was never really threatened in the game and they never trailed after the first minute of play. The game was still close, 20-16, with 8:12 left in the first half until York went on 10-0 run that was capped off on a dunk by Esonwune. The Cardinals maintained their 14 point advantage into the locker room leading 38-24.
The Cardinals maintained their big lead throughout the second half. York took its biggest lead of the game, 49-31, on a three-pointer by Wilson with 14:08 left in the game. Lehman never got within 12 points for the remainder of the game.
Also contributing for York was Michael Salamanca (Hollis, NY/ Cardozo) with 12 points and four assists and Omari Phipps (Laurelton, NY/ St. Johns Prep) with 10 points and five rebounds. Lehman’s Jameson Garcia led all scorers with 21 points, while also pulling down 12 rebounds.
York improves to 10-6, 3-2 in the CUNYAC, while Lehman falls to 6-9, 2-3 in the CUNYAC. York will host City Tech on Friday at 8 p.m. in a game that will be aired on tape delay on Queens Public Television.
