Lady Cardinals Can’t Hold off Panthers in 65-53 Defeat

OLD WESTBURY, NY— The York College women’s basketball team suffered a 65-53 loss to SUNY Old Westbury on Monday evening. A second-half rally by the Panthers proved to be too much for the Lady Cardinals as they fell to 4-10 on the season.
The Lady Cardinals looked strong early on as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead on a jumper by Niya Jarvis (Bronx, NY/ Talent Unlimited) with 13 minutes left to play in the first half. However, Old Westbury quickly responded with a 13-2 run of their own over the next five minutes to cut the Lady Cardinal advantage to 17-15. Old Westbury’s Pam Robinson had nine points during the run. The Cardinals then finished the half just as strong as they started it, outscoring the Panthers 14-8 over the final eight minutes of the first period to take a 31-23 lead at the break.
The Lady Cardinals maintained their advantage in the early parts of the second half and still lead by five, 38-33, with 12:44 left to play. However, Old Westbury rallied again and led 45-40 with 7:47 to go. Then, at the 4:04 mark, a jumper by Jarvis tied the game back up at 50-50. Old Westbury then got hot at the right time and outscored York 15-3 over the final four minutes to earn the victory.
Robinson finished with a game-high 27 points for the Panthers. Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) led York with 14 points, while Maimouna Dabo (Bamako, Mali/ Lycee Notre Dame du Niger) had 12 points and six boards. Jarvis finished with seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
York will host Lehman College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
