NEW YORK, NY— In a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) women’s basketball game, the York College Lady Cardinals fell to Hunter College, 50-30, on Wednesday.
Both teams came into the game with conference record of 4-5 and tied for the fifth seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Playoffs. With the top four seeds getting a home game in the first round of the playoffs, this match-up could prove vital for both squads.
Both teams struggled from the field through most of the first half. With 2:49 to play in the first half, Hunter held an 18-14 advantage. After a three-point play by Hunter’s Andrea Buckham gave the Hawks a 21-14 lead, York’s Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) responded with a three-pointer to cut the lead back to four, 21,-17, going into the locker room.
However in the second half the Hawks began to open up the game. The Cardinals still only trailed by six, 27-21, after a Della-Jean Louis (Brooklyn, NY/ All-City Leadership) jumper was good with 13:48 to play in the game. Shortly after though, the Hawks went on a 15-1 run over a four minute span to increase their lead to 42-22. That run would put York in a hole they could not climb out from.
Maeweather led York with 10 points and six rebounds. Buckham had a huge game for Hunter, netting 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
York (6-14, 4-6 CUNYAC) will look to get back on track on Friday when it hosts Medgar Evers at 6 p.m.
