Salamanca Leads York to Fourth Straight Win, 76-59, over John Jay

JAMAICA, NY— Michael Salamanca (Hollis, NY/ Cardozo) finished just three rebounds shy of a triple-double to lead the York College men’s basketball team to a, 76-59, win over John Jay College. Salamanca finished with 11 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds as York picked up their fourth straight win. Aaron Wilson (Brooklyn, NY/ Thomas Jefferson) netted a season-high 23 points and Omari Phipps (Laurelton, NY/ St. Johns Prep) also had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals.
After falling behind by five, 11-5, five minutes into the game, the Cardinals turned it up and never looked back. A three-pointer by Salamanca with 13:28 to play in the half, gave York a 13-11 lead. York then continued to extend their lead throughout the first-half. The Cardinals took a 13 point lead, 33-20, into the locker room.
I t was more of the same in the second half as the Cardinals shot lights-out from the field. York shot 57.7 percent in the second half and 53.8 percent for the game. They took their biggest lead of the game, 49-27, on another three-pointer by Salamanca with 12:18 to play in the game. The Bloodhounds were able to pull within 12 points before York pulled away once again.
John Jay’s Gary Brady led the Bloodhounds with 13 points and Vaughn Mason added 12 points.
The Cardinals improve to 13-6, 6-2 in the CUNYAC. York will be idle until January 26 when it visits Brooklyn College at 3 p.m.
Notes: Aaron Wilson connected on his first four shots of the day and had connected on 14 consecutive shots from the field dating back to last game before he missed a three-pointer mid-way through the first half.
