Lady Cardinals Trounce College of New Rochelle

Cardinals Force 50 turnovers in Rout; Maeweather and Padilla Earn All-Tournament Honors

BROOKLYN, NY— The York College women’s basketball team forced 50 turnovers en route to a dominating ,75-13, victory over the College of New Rochelle at the Betty Shabazz Invitational at Medgar Evers College Sunday.   Elizabeth Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/ Bushwick) was named tournament MVP and Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

The Lady Cardinals dominated the game from the tip-off as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead when freshman Maimouna Dabo (Bamako, Mali/ Lycee Notre Dame du Niger) connected on a three-pointer with 17:25 remaining in the first half.   The Cardinals continued to extend their lead throughout the first half and led 38-11 at halftime. 

 

In the second half, York completely dominated the game.  The Lady Cardinals held the College of New Rochelle to just two points in the second half who did not score until their was just 2:55 left to play.   Overall, York scored 39 unanswered points and held New Rochelle scoreless for a span of 19:54. 

 

Elizabeth Padilla scored a game-high 13 points, while grabbing five rebounds.  Ishonda McFarland (Bronx, NY/ Columbus) recorded a double-double, netting 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while also nabbing six steals.  Niya Jarvis (Bronx, NY/ Talent Unlimited) had seven points and ten rebounds, while Dabo finished with ten points.   Chiquita Greene (Brooklyn, NY/ Harry Van Arsdale) led the Cardinals on defense with eight steals.   York finished with 35 steals as a team. 

 

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 2-4 on the season. York will open its conference schedule on Tuesday when they host Brooklyn College at 6 p.m.
