MASPETH, NY— In a showdown between the top two teams in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), the York College men’s soccer team emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over John Jay College on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-4, 4-0 in the CUNYAC and move into sole possession of first place.
The Bloodhounds struck first when John Jay’s Hiromi Karahashi scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute of the game. However, the Cardinals quickly responded with two first half goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead before halftime. Francisco Florez (Columbia/ Bryant) evened the scored just three minutes later on a kick from nearly mid-field that sailed over the keeper’s head.
Then, in the 37th minute, Ansel Bobb (Trinidad/ St. Benedicts) set up Michel Nicolas (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/ Newtown) for the eventual game-winner. It was third game-winning goal for Nicolas, who has appeared in just five games this season.
In an intensely played second half neither team could net a goal despite several opportunities on each side. The Bloodhounds had 10 shots in the second half alone but failed to convert. York goalie Kafui Kouakou (CTC Ora Labora/ Togo, Africa) made six stops including several difficult saves down the stretch.
Overall, the Cardinals outshot John Jay 15-14, while John Jay held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Cardinals, with 12 points in the standings, move ahead of John Jay (10 points) into first place. York will look to expand their lead as they visit conference-rival City Tech on Saturday at noon.
