Jones Leads York to Season-Opening Victory in Women’s Tennis

Jones Rallies from Early Deficit to Clinch Win for York

JAMAICA, NY— In the opening match of the 2011 season, the York College women's tennis team narrowly defeated UMass- Boston by a score of 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.  With the score tied at 4-4, the match came down to #2 singles, where sophomore Nicole Jones earned a hard-fought three-set victory to clinch the win for the Lady Cardinals.
 
Jones dropped the first set against UMass-Boston's Samantha Counts and then trailed 4-1 in the second set but rallied to win five unanswered games to even the match at a set apiece.  In the third and deciding set, Jones carried that momentum and won easily by a score of 6-1. 
 
Also contributing for York was the doubles tandem of Nina Olladinkankwu and Valerie Roland who won at #2 doubles by a score of 8-2.
 
York, 1-0, will visit St. Joseph's College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
