JAMAICA, NY— In the opening match of the 2011 season, the York College women's tennis team narrowly defeated UMass- Boston by a score of 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. With the score tied at 4-4, the match came down to #2 singles, where sophomore
Nicole Jones earned a hard-fought three-set victory to clinch the win for the Lady Cardinals.
Jones dropped the first set against UMass-Boston's Samantha Counts and then trailed 4-1 in the second set but rallied to win five unanswered games to even the match at a set apiece. In the third and deciding set, Jones carried that momentum and won easily by a score of 6-1.
Also contributing for York was the doubles tandem of Nina Olladinkankwu and
Valerie Roland who won at #2 doubles by a score of 8-2.
York, 1-0, will visit St. Joseph's College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
