JAMAICA, NY— The York College Athletics Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Mark Benjamin as the new head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. Mark's wife Jenny Benjamin will serve as the assistant coach.
Mark Benjamin, a York alumnus who ran for the Cardinals in 1974 and 1975, brings decades of coaching experience at the high school level. Most recently, Benjamin has served as the assistant coach at Townsend High School in Queens for the past five seasons. Prior to Townsend, Benjamin was the sprint coach at Mary Louis High School in Jamaica Estates. In addition, Benjamin served as the Executive Director of the Queens Sprinters Club from 1990-2005.
“It's daunting but exciting,” said Mark Benjamin, when asked about coaching at the collegiate level for the first time. “It's a big step up, but I've had a lot of success in the past and I will be looking for more.”
Jenny Benjamin also has a long coaching background, as she has served as the Program Director and Head Coach of the Queens Sprinters from 1993-2005.
“Mark brings years of experience to the program,” said York Athletic Director, Ronald St. John. “He's coached some of our elite athletes on the high school level, prior to them coming to York. He knows the community well and his PSAL coaching experience should help us recruit top athletes in this area. I believe Mark will help us to continue the success we've had in track and field.”
